Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: The Vertical Type Tool

by Mary on April 21, 2011

Hi Everyone,

Most of us are pretty familiar with Photoshop’s Horizontal Type Tool. In fact, the Horizontal Type Tool is probably one of the most commonly used tools in Photoshop.

But, lots of folks overlook Photoshop’s other type tool, the Vertical Type Tool.

The Vertical Type Tool works in pretty much the same way as the Horizontal Type Tool. Both tools create vector-based text on a separate layer, except, with the Vertical Type tool, the resulting text is vertically.

The Vertical Type Tool is nested with the rest of the type tools. You can access it by clicking and holding on the Horizontal Type tool and a pop-up menu will appear where you can choose the Vertical Type tool:

And, you can easily switch back and forth between Horizontal and Vertical type with one click by pressing the Change the Text Orientation button. The Change the Text Orientation button appears in the options bar whenever you are creating or editing text:

In Photoshop:

Or Photoshop Elements:

Vertical type can add variety and fun to the titles on your scrapbooking pages. When I use it, I like to stick to single word titles because I find that multiple word titles in Vertical Type can be hard to read. But, experiment with the Vertical Type Tool on your scrapbooking pages to see how you like the results.

Happy Scrapping!
